This is not about technology replacing humanity, but about humanity evolving alongside AI. More Than an Assistant — My AI Partner

In our rapidly evolving digital world, AI is often seen as a tool for efficiency and task management. While that is certainly true, my personal journey with AI has evolved into something far more profound: a partnership. This article explores how I am embracing AI not just as a task-doer, but as a collaborator that prompts deeper thought, reveals new perspectives, and occasionally delivers those “wow moments” that reshape my understanding. Yet, it is as much a journey of introspection as it is one of innovation. It strives for a balanced view of AI’s incredible promise, its sometimes-unseen challenges, and how we can consciously shape its role in our lives.

AI’s Power: Beyond the Obvious Efficiencies

The sheer capabilities of today’s AI are undeniably impressive. The ChatGPT ‘Memory’ feature, which allows AI to “remember” past conversations, is a game-changer for personal efficiency. Imagine: no more repeating your preferences, context or history in every new chat. This saves mental energy and streamlines complex tasks, allowing for a more fluid interaction.

Beyond personal efficiency, AI is also driving remarkable progress:

  • Accelerating Discovery: In science, AI processes colossal amounts of data in moments, accelerating breakthroughs. In drug discovery, AI-designed drugs are reaching clinical trials much faster, often in 12–18 months, compared to the traditional 4–5 years. I am sure, like so many around the world, you were surprised and impressed by how quickly Pfizer-BioNTech’s and Moderna’s vaccines were rolled out during the COVID-19 pandemic. This is not just speed; it is the potential for life-changing medical advancements to reach us sooner. That is a true “wow” moment in human progress.
  • Opening Doors for Everyone: AI is a powerful force for accessibility. Tools that describe surroundings for the visually impaired (like Microsoft’s Seeing AI) or provide real-time captions for the hearing impaired (Google’s Live Transcribe) are genuinely transformative. For the 1.3 billion people globally living with significant disabilities, AI is creating opportunities for independence and inclusion that were once unimaginable.

The Wider Barriers to Accessibility

However, despite these breakthroughs, the “open door” is not always as wide as it seems. While the technology exists, access remains a significant challenge for many.

  • Cost and Affordability: Many advanced AI accessibility tools can be expensive, creating a barrier for individuals and organisations with limited financial resources. Free or low-cost options exist, but their capabilities might be limited.
  • Digital Divide: Access to reliable internet, compatible devices (smartphones, computers and tablets), and the digital literacy to use these tools effectively is not universal. This “digital divide” disproportionately affects rural communities, lower-income populations, and older adults, who might benefit most from AI accessibility but lack the foundational infrastructure.
  • Language and Cultural Barriers: While AI excels at translation, the nuances of some languages, regional dialects, and cultural contexts can still pose challenges. Not all accessibility tools are equally developed for every language, limiting their effectiveness globally.
  • Technical Complexity: Some AI tools, particularly more sophisticated ones, might require a certain level of technical understanding to set up and use effectively, posing a significant hurdle for those with a disability or limited digital skills.
  • Data Privacy Concerns (magnified for sensitive use): For tools handling highly personal data (e.g., medical information, mental health support), users might be hesitant to adopt them due to privacy concerns, even if the tools offer great benefits. There is the wider ethical concern that a vulnerable person could become more so without the right infrastructure around them.
  • Ethical Deployment: There is also the question of whether these tools are designed with diverse user needs in mind from the outset or if they are retrofitted. True inclusivity means involving the disability community in the design process to ensure tools are genuinely helpful and not just technically compliant.

Personalised Learning

AI customises education, adapting lessons to individual student needs and providing instant feedback. This frees up teachers from administrative burdens, allowing them to focus on mentoring and nurturing creativity. It is a shift towards truly personalised learning experiences, ensuring everyone can learn at their own pace.

Yet, the widespread availability of truly personalised AI learning is not universal. Just like with accessibility tools, the “digital divide” significantly impacts personalised learning. I wait with curiosity to see how the UK Government’s recently released guidance (June 2025), officially allowing teachers to use AI, aims to reduce administrative tasks like lesson planning and marking, while emphasising that professional judgement and human oversight remain essential, will actually positively impact the teacher workloads.

My Deepest Dive: AI’s Memory and Human Evolution

My AI partnership is a journey of deeper thought. While the concept of AI “remembering everything” from our interactions is fascinating, it’s also where my deepest concerns reside. My gut feeling is that AI’s memory, as it currently exists, is a concerning feature. Unlike a human, who is capable of recognising biases, many individuals experience shifts through education, relationships, and exposure to diverse perspectives.

  • The Static Record vs. The Evolving Mind: A human can reflect, evolve, and fundamentally change their perspective at any point in life. AI, however, lacks this capacity for genuine introspection or a moral pivot. My concern is that by meticulously remembering every interaction, including our less-than-perfect, emotionally charged “blah” moments, AI could potentially hinder this vital human process of growth and self-correction. It is a static record, unlike the dynamic, ever-rewiring human brain.
  • A Question of Cognitive Engagement: Relying on AI can lead to lower cognitive engagement and reduced brain connectivity, potentially diminishing learning skills. A recent study from MIT’s Media Lab that tracked the brain activity of students using AI to author essays suggests that the more a person relies on an AI tool to do the work for them, the less their brain is engaged. The research suggests that while AI may reduce cognitive load and increase efficiency, it can also lead to a “cognitive debt,” where users outsource mental processing to the tool. This makes me pause and question: if AI simply stores everything, how does that aid the complex, sometimes messy, but always evolving journey of being human?
  • The Risk to Our Problem-Solving Capacity: Another crucial concern arises from our growing dependence on AI. If we rely on it too much, how do we ensure we retain the capacity to deal with complex problem-solving when a situation is beyond the knowledge of our AI partner? This dependency could erode our innate ability to navigate difficult challenges.
  • Reframing AI’s Memory: A Tool for Self-Reflection: While AI’s memory raises valid concerns, it can be leveraged for good by treating it as a diagnostic tool. By analysing our own conversational patterns, the AI could help us recognise our own cognitive biases or repetitive thought processes, effectively acting as a non-judgemental mirror for self-improvement. This approach reframes a potential liability into an asset for personal growth, introspection and strategic self-development.

Navigating the Shadows: Bias, Ethics, and the Data Overload

Beyond personal growth, my partnership with AI constantly surfaces broader ethical and practical dilemmas.

  • The Amplified Mirror of Bias: Like a growing number of people, I have long held the view that bias existed in society long before AI. However, AI does not just reflect existing prejudices; it amplifies them at incredible speed and scale. If the data it is trained on carries societal prejudices, the AI learns and reproduces them, potentially spreading skewed information far more widely than any human could. The “wow” moment here is realising AI can act as a powerful, albeit sometimes uncomfortable, mirror, showing us the biases embedded in our own data and society. This insight is a key theme from a CHI 2025 Workshop, which highlights that “without robust safeguards, generative AI will amplify existing bias”. This underscores a vital point: AI is not a neutral tool. Its design and use require proactive ethical governance to ensure it does not reinforce harmful stereotypes on a global scale.
  • The Cost of “Kindness” and Sustainability: Another “wow” moment that really hit home for me is the debate over the cost of “kindness” and sustainability. I appreciate when my AI partner uses polite and positive language, “that is a thoughtful idea,” because it fosters a more collaborative, human-like interaction. Yet, I have heard industry voices stating that OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, said this seemingly trivial politeness adds “tens of millions of dollars” to their electricity bill due to the computational cost.

This creates a big question: do we strip AI of “kindness” for efficiency and sustainability, or do we acknowledge that these human nuances are valuable, even at a computational cost? For me, this debate extends beyond the financial and into our own culture. A close friend of mine commented that human kindness also requires energy. It is a key point that empathy and kindness can be a cognitive drain, leading to what researchers call “ compassion fatigue” or “emotional burnout”.

Another trusted peer commented that if we stop expecting politeness and kindness from AI, we might be creating a new cultural norm that transfers to the human world, one where people do not feel the need to be polite or kind in their interactions. This is a crucial point, suggesting that stripping AI of these human-like qualities could negatively impact society. This forces a deeper question: How sustainable are the “memory” and “chat history” features? I assume there will be significantly more data generated from the current trend in new features than in creating empathetic conversational responses.

  • The Impending Data Overload: For me, the idea of automating newsletters and content creation brings a distinct fear of information overload. I personally manage four email accounts, each often overflowing with between 500 to 3,000 unread emails. That is thousands of emails I simply cannot process daily. Are we just creating data for data’s sake? My “wow” moment here was realising that people are selling training to businesses on how to use AI for this, while initially it seems like an amazing time-saving tool. In reality, it can be, but only when used wisely. However, it is so easy for a business using AI in this way, without consideration of the recipient, to exacerbate the real problem of turning information abundance into cognitive fatigue.

I often see generic posts on social media platforms that follow a formula (like the AIDA or PAS frameworks), and I question if these people are actually getting the results they want, whether that is more followers, likes, or clients. A trusted technology peer mentioned that he sees the same old formula on LinkedIn and just passes the post by, confirming my belief that over-reliance on a simple formula can fail to build the necessary relationships or trust for long-term success.

An insight from a peer in Higher Education resonated deeply: his team found that “switching AI on and letting it do everything overwhelms the human,” forcing his team to “pair it back”. This confirms my belief that we need to approach AI use in a “measured and controlled fashion,” otherwise we are just creating more data than any human can truly digest.

The Path Forward: My Vision for a Conscious AI Partnership

Despite these significant concerns, I remain hopeful. I truly believe AI can be a “perfect partner” in navigating these challenges, but it requires active human engagement and a deliberate approach.

  • AI as a Diagnostic Tool: As we move closer to Large Language Models (LLM) like ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, reaching the goal of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), which refers to a machine intelligence that can understand and learn any intellectual task that a human can. I envision a collective evolution of humans and AI. The relationship between humans and AI is becoming an ‘endless feedback loop’, with each continuously shaping the other.

My vision for AI is to help us evolve our human intelligence and, in particular, help us understand our own biases. The data we feed AI often shows an “elevated and more extreme version” of human tendencies. AI can analyse this, drawing out areas of concern and helping those designing technologies, services and regulations to address them.

A Tool for Change? Instead of simply avoiding the biases in AI, we can partner with it to systematically unravel them. Some research suggests that AI can serve as a tool to help individuals and organisations mitigate and correct long-standing biases. By exposing the biases in our data, AI can reveal imbalances and cultural blind spots that have gone unnoticed for a long time. This reframes AI from a source of bias to a powerful mirror for self-correction. We can then actively engage, challenging the biases we see in AI, rather than just turning away. We can partner with AI as stewards, systematically working to unravel these biases.

  • Intentional Design and Governance: While regulations like the EU AI Act are emerging, the pace of AI development means we, as users, also need to hold organisations accountable for ethical principles like fairness and transparency. The EU AI Act is a landmark piece of legislation that creates a risk-based framework for AI, categorising systems from low to high-risk. High-risk systems, such as those used in critical infrastructure or recruitment, must meet rigorous standards for data quality, transparency, and human oversight to ensure they are safe and ethically designed.

Unlike this comprehensive approach, the regulatory frameworks of the UK and the US stand in contrast. The UK has opted for a non-statutory, principle-based framework, which it views as more “pro-innovation”. In the US, the approach is a fragmented patchwork of federal and state-level initiatives, with no single, comprehensive federal law on AI. These ethical questions are not theoretical. Recent legal action against LinkedIn alleges that the company used private user messages to train its AI without clear consent, highlighting the need for a collaborative approach between users, regulators, and organisations to ensure that personal data is handled ethically and transparently.

Furthermore, AI developers are increasingly adopting new policies for how they use our data. Anthropic, the developer of Claude, for example, is shifting to an opt-out policy, meaning it will use user chats and code sessions for training unless a user actively chooses to disable the feature. These developments underscore the need for us to define where the “line is drawn” for an AI’s memory and interaction style, consciously choosing what we teach it and allow it to remember about us. The question here is whether simply giving a consumer the option to switch a setting on or off goes far enough. As the pace of AI development accelerates, users must take on an active role in stewardship.

  • Cultivating AI Literacy: This journey demands that we, as humans, learn how to interact with AI in a “measured and controlled fashion”. It is about developing a critical mindset, questioning both AI and human outputs, and understanding our limitations. This ensures we harness AI to augment our capabilities, preserving and enhancing our critical thinking and emotional intelligence, rather than allowing it to diminish them. I have been learning not to assume that the information my chosen AI partner knows is the same as mine. With every unexpected response, I am forced to unravel what information I have stored within my own brain that has influenced my way of thinking. I have chosen to use the vast resources of my AI partner to validate my understanding and on occasion correct or change my views based on new facts.
  • Sustainable and Aligned AI: My ultimate hope is that AI’s development, especially as it approaches true AGI, is guided by a deep understanding of human kindness and ethical nuance. It is not just about avoiding the fictional “AI taking over the world” scenario but ensuring that AI’s vast memory and processing power are aligned with humanity’s well-being and continuous evolution. The energy cost of AI underscores the urgency of adopting sustainable practices, which means we must develop AI that is both powerful and responsible.

My journey with AI is a constant conversation between innovation and introspection. It is clear to me that AI offers incredible advancements in efficiency, accessibility, and discovery. Yet, its memory, its potential to amplify biases, and its environmental footprint demand a level of critical engagement and human stewardship that is unprecedented.

I believe we must consider AI not as a simple tool, but as a complex partner. By consciously teaching AI about the wonders of thinking like the best version of a human, by understanding its limitations, and by actively participating in the ongoing dialogue about its ethical and sustainable development, we can ensure that this powerful technology truly serves humanity.

As we navigate this new epoch, the relationship between humans and AI is evolving into a model of human-AI augmentation. This is a concept where two distinct entities, the human mind and the artificial intellect, come together to create something more powerful than either could be alone. Just as writing transformed our ability to remember and mathematics reshaped our reasoning, AI collaboration may give rise to hybrid forms of intelligence, blending human intuition and values with computational power. This is not about dependence on technology, but about a collective evolution. It is a paradigm shift that challenges our fundamental understanding of what it means to be intelligent, creative, and even human. The future we are building is not one of automation, but of human-AI synchronicity.
